The Grand Hotel of Palma de Mallorca is a modernist construction by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a disciple of the great Catalan architect Gaudí, which was inaugurated on February 9, 1903. It is located at number 3 of Plaza Weyler in the heart of the center.
The Grand Hotel was the pioneer of the luxury tourism and hotel industry in Mallorca. It was the best of the hotels in Spain in luxury and class until the inauguration of the Ritz Hotel in Madrid. The dining rooms and other rooms were adorned with works of art by prominent painters of the time, such as the Catalans Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquín Mir. The furniture, from the Austrian firm "Tjotet", and the tableware, from the Austrian factory "Artur Krupp", guaranteed luxury within the reach of few. In addition to its architectural splendor, the Grand Hotel stood out for its industrial innovations: it generated its own electricity and had central heating, an elevator and running water.
After some closures due to the civil war and subsequent transformations into a government and institutional building, in 1993 it was acquired by the "La Caixa" bank foundation and converted into a cultural center, currently called "CaixaForum". This center is now the venue for periodic exhibitions, concerts, conferences, and houses a permanent painting exhibition dedicated to the painter Anglada Camarasa who lived in Pollença and was a lover of Cala de Sant Vicenç.
It is a visit that we recommend for its architectural value, for the temporary exhibitions and for the permanent exhibition of the painter Anglada Camarassa.
A walk through El Born and Las Ramblas and a visit to the fashion boutiques and book stores in the area will complete this pleasant visit to the capital of Mallorca.
