In 1962, the Promotion of Tourism of Mallorca (Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca) and a group of hotel businessmen decided to create an award for the millionth tourist visitor. On the appointed day and already knowing the flight where this number was going to occur, they contacted the pilot of a BEA "British European Airways" flight that was flying from England to alert the crew and make sure that the "one millionth passenger" (a couple from Manchester who would be spending two weeks on holiday in Mallorca) were greeted by a music band, typical Majorcan dances and dignitaries upon landing in Palma.
When the plane doors opened, instead of the designated couple, an old English lady descended smiling, greeting the welcoming committee and posing for the press cameras. The manager of the "Fomento", Mr. Antoni Pomar, had the shameful task of telling her that her welcome was not for her but for the couple behind her. The lady replied: “Forgive my mistake, the truth is that I thought that all this had been organized for me. Perhaps because I have written a lot about the island that I love so much. By the way, my name is Agatha Christie." Antoni Pomar, the "Fomento" representative could not believe that such a promotional opportunity had been lost. In his memoir “Anecdotario Turístico de Baleares” (1991) he wrote: “I thought I saw that the runway was sinking under my feet. I could not believe that it was Agatha Christie who had represented this honor”.
The english author visited Mallorca for the first time in 1932 and later discovered the north of the island and loved Pollença, especially Puerto de Pollença and Formentor, where she returned on different and multiple occasions, always incognito and without much company. The first times she stayed in Palma de Mallorca but she stopped doing it because she considered that she was saturated. The Pollença area was also her inspiration for the murder mystery titled “Problem at Pollensa bay” (1939). There was evidence of her stays at the “Hotel Formentor” and at the “Hotel Illa d'Or” and of visits to Pollença town and Cala Sant Vicenç, but there is not much written or graphic documentation about this, since she was not very fond of public or social acts. That is why the non-official history (a legend) tells us that on the same day in 1962, when the BEA plane landed, she was the one who coincidentally was destined to be the millionth tourist but she told the authorities not to do the welcome party, since she was coming incognito. And that is why the couple who got off the plane just behind her were chosen. But we better leave that for some television series or mystery novel...
